Starter

A starter is an electric motor that initiates rotational motion in a vehicle’s internal combustion engine before it can power itself. As its name implies, the starter is responsible for the processes involved in starting vehicles up. It converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.

The starter uses electricity from the battery to turn the crankshaft which gets the vehicle going.

Alternators

An alternator is part of a vehicle’s charging system and produces electricity for many devices. A type of generator, the alternator transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy. It provides power to essential parts of the vehicle such as the engine fan, ignition coils, radio, air conditioning system and various parts of the fuel injection system.

Although the vehicle’s battery supplies some electricity, most of the electrical mechanisms require the alternator’s steady stream of power.
